The Wallace Monument commemorates Sir William Wallace. He was a Scottish knight who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence. He defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. The monument stands on the hill from which he was said to have watched the gathering of the army of Edward I of England just before the battle. The monument is open to the general public. There are 246 steps in the spiral staircase to the viewing platform inside the crown of the monument.
