Merton College (House or College of Scholars of Merton in the University of Oxford) is a college in Oxford, England, the United Kingdom.
マートン・カレッジは、オックスフォード大学を構成するカレッジで、3番目に古いカレッジです。このゴシック様式のカレッジは、1264年に創設されました。後に天皇陛下となる徳仁親王殿下（2019年5月1日に皇位に即位）が、1983～1985年にマートン・カレッジに留学されました。このマートン・ストリートに面してそびえるゴシック様式の建物は、マートン・カレッジ礼拝堂です。マートン・カレッジ礼拝堂は、カレッジの礼拝堂だけではなく教区教会としても1891年まで用いられ、したがって、マートン・カレッジ礼拝堂には、カレッジへの扉だけではなくマートン・ストリートに面した扉があります。
Merton College (the House or College of Scholars of Merton in the University of Oxford) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford and is the 3rd oldest college of the university. This Gothic college was founded in 1264. Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan, later the Emperor of Japan (He acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne on the 1st of May in 2019) studied at the college from 1983 to 1985. This Gothic dominant building on Merton Street is Merton College Chapel. The chapel served as the parish church as well as the college chapel until 1891 and therefore has a door on the street as well as doors into the college.

Merton College Chapel belongs to the Church of England and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The chapel originated in the church of St. John the Baptist granted to the scholars of Merton College by the Abbey of Reading in 1290. Afterwards the church fell into a ruinous condition and the church was renovated. The present choir with its enormous east window was complete by 1294. Subsequently the transept was complete by around 1425 and the tower was complete by around 1450.

Mob Quad in Merton College is often claimed to be the oldest quadrangle in Oxford but actually Front Quad in the college was enclosed earlier. Nevertheless this fine quadrangle has since been copied at many other colleges and universities worldwide. The quadrangle was once called various names. The word (mob) of the present name derived from the Latin word (the fickle crowd) does not appear in English until the late 17th century. The name was possibly originally a humorous description of the occupants.

Mob Quad is surrounded with old medieval buildings such as Merton College Library. The library was built around 1373. The library is one of the earliest libraries in England and the oldest academic library in the world still in continuous daily use.
