The Royal Exchange was founded in the 16th century. The first building opened in 1571 and was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The second building on the site opened in 1669 and was again burnt down in 1838. The present building was built in the Neoclassical style and opened in 1844. Traditionally the steps of the building is the place where certain royal proclamations (such as the dissolution of parliament) are read out by either a herald or a crier. The building is one of the locations where a herald proclaims the new monarch to the public following the death or abdication of the previous monarch.
