リーズ城は、9世紀に建てられた木造の領主の邸宅に起源があります。最初の石造りの城は、1119年に建てられました。
Leeds Castle originated from a wooden manor built in the 9th century. The first stone castle was built in 1119.

Queen Eleanor of Castile (the wife of Edward I) purchases the castle in 1278 and begins the long history of Royal ownership. Edward I enhanced the defences of the castle and probably created the lake surrounding the castle. A barbican spanning 3 islands was also built and a gloriette with apartments for the king and queen was added. Henry VIII transformed the castle from a fortified stronghold to a magnificent royal palace in 1519 for Catherine of Aragon (his first wife). In 1552 the castle was granted to a nobleman and nearly 300 years of Royal ownership came to an end.
