The complex of ruins of Hastings Castle stands on the cliff near the sea. Nowadays the complex is open to the public between March and October.
ヘイスティングス城は、1070年に征服王ウィリアム1世によって建てられました。1287年に、激しい嵐が数か月に渡って南海岸を襲い、柔らかい砂岩の崖の表面の広い範囲がヘイスティングス城の一部分とともに海に落ちました。1339年および1377年に、ヘイスティングスは、フランス人に攻撃され、建物は燃やされました。15世紀の間、浸食は止まらず、ヘイスティングス城は徐々に海へ失われていきました。16世紀中頃には、ヘイスティングス城は、ヘンリー8世による修道院解体によって更なる一撃を受けました。このようにして、ヘイスティングス城は、朽ちていきました。第二次世界大戦の最中、ヘイスティングス城は、空襲によって更に損傷を受けました。
Hastings Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1070. In 1287 violent storms battered the south coast for many months and large sections of the face of the soft sandstone cliffs fell into the sea along with parts of the castle. In both 1339 and 1377 the town was attacked by the French leaving many burnt buildings. Throughout the 15th century erosion was unchecked and gradually more of the castle was lost to the sea. At the middle of the 16th century the castle receive another blow by the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. Thus the castle fell into decay. During the Second World War the castle was damaged further by bombing raids.
