According to official records, Chester Racecourse (known as the Roodee) is the oldest racecourse still in use in England. The first recorded race was held in 1539. The racecourse is thought to be the smallest racecourse in England at 1 mile and 1 furlong (1.8 kilometres) long.
チェスター競馬場は、ディー川の岸にあります。この場所は、ローマ人の居住の間は波止場でしたが、ディー川が沈泥でふさがれて船は使えなくなりました。フィールドの中央に向かって、ルードとして知られる小さな十字架で飾られた丘になっています。ルーディーの名前は、ルードに由来しています（ルーディーは十字架の島を意味するルード・アイの転化）。
Chester Racecourse lies on the banks of the River Dee. The site was once a harbour during the Roman settlement of the city but was closed as the river silted up thus making navigation impossible. Towards the centre of the field is a raised mound which is decorated by a small cross known as a rood. The name of Roodee derives from the rood (Roodee is a corruption of Rood Eye meaning The Island of the Cross).
