The Topkapı Palace

The Topkapı Palace was one of the major residences of the Ottoman sultans. The construction of the palace began in 1459 ordered by Mehmed the Conqueror. The palace was used as a royal residence for almost 400 years from 1478 to 1853. The palace was originally called the New Palace and was later given the current name meaning Cannon Gate. The palace retained some of its functions including the imperial treasury, library and mint even after the royal court left. The palace was transformed into a museum in 1924 following the end of the Ottoman Empire.
