The first mention of the market of La Boqueria in Barcelona dates from 1217. A pig market was held at this site from 1470 onwards and was known as Mercat de la Palla until 1794. The market was not enclosed and had no official status in the beginning. The market was regarded simply as an extension of the Plaza Nueva market. The construction of a separate market on La Rambla was decided in 1835. The market was built and opened in 1840. The plans for the building were modified many times and the inauguration of the structure finally took place in 1853. The metal roof that still exists today was constructed in 1914.
