The Cathedral of the Theotokos

The Cathedral of the Theotokos is the main Russian Orthodox cathedral of Vilnius and the entire Lithuania. The cathedral is one of the oldest churches of Vilnius. The original was built from 1346 to 1348 before the christianisation of Lithuania when the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the last pagan state in Europe. In 1609 the cathedral was taken over by the Uniate Catholic Church. The cathedral was abandoned in 1748 after a major fire and the building was used for various other purposes. The building was reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1785. The building was sold to the Vilnius University and was thoroughly modernised in the Neoclassical style in 1822. Afterwards the building was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church during the Russification campaign was rebuilt from 1865 to 1868 in the Gothic style as the original. The cathedral was damaged during the Second World War but was restored in 1948 (completed in 1957). Furthermore the cathedral was once again renovated in 1998.
