Oktoberfest takes place in the extensive park of Theresienwiese. The park has a space of 420,000 square metres. The name of the park derives from the name of Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen and means Theresa’s Fields.

Moreover the festival lasted until the 1st Monday in October (October 4) to commemorate the bicentennial in 2010.

Visitors can enjoy numerous attractions such as amusement rides, stalls and games at Oktoberfest. There is also a wide variety of traditional foods including Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzels), Weißwurst (a white sausage), Hendl (roast chicken), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Sauerkraut (red cabbage).

There are currently 14 large beer tents and 12 small beer tents at the Oktoberfest. The tents are wooden temporary structures which are only used during the festival. The set up work for the tents often begins 3 months before the start of the festival.

Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot (the German Beer Purity Law) and brewed within the city limits of Munich can be served at Oktoberfest. Beers meeting these criteria are designated Oktoberfest Beer. The beer is supplied by 6 breweries, namely, Spaten, Löwenbräu, Augustiner-Bräu, Hofbräu-München, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Traditionally the beer was the lager called Märzen (brewed in March and allowed to ferment slowly during summer). The colour of the beer has become lighter since the late 20th century.

Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world (including Japan) also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modelled after the original Munich festival.
