Gangō-ji Temple is a temple of Shingon Risshū Buddhism (Shingon-Vinaya Buddhism). The principal image of the temple is Chikō Mandala (the mandala representing the Pure Land which the priest Chikō obtained).
元興寺は、元々、飛鳥の地に蘇我馬子によって創建され、710年の平城京遷都に続いて718年に奈良へ移されました。元興寺は、かつては強大な寺院で、南都七大寺の一つでした。その後、元興寺は、中世に衰退し広い境内のほとんどを失いました。元興寺の最も保存されている部分は、元興寺極楽坊として知られています。
Gangō-ji Temple was originally founded by Soga no Umako (a member of the powerful Soga clan of Japan) in Asuka. The temple was moved to Nara in 718 following the capital relocation to Heijō-kyō in 710. The temple was once a powerful temple and was one of the Seven Great Temples in Nara. Afterwards the temple declined in the medieval times and lost most of its large precincts. The best preserved part of the temple is known as the Gangō-ji Gokuraku-bō Hall.
