Togetsukyō Bridge is a bridge in Kyoto, Japan.
渡月橋（とげつきょう）は、桂川（亀岡から嵐山までは保津川）に架かる橋で、嵐山のシンボルです。橋長155メートル、幅11メートルです。亀山上皇が、橋の上空を移動していく月を眺めて「くまなき月の渡るに似る」と感想を述べたことから、渡月橋と名付けられました。
Togetsukyō Bridge is a bridge crossing the Katsura River (a continuation of the Hozu River). The bridge is a symbol of Arashiyama district. The bridge is 155 metres long and 11 metres wide. The name of the bridge means Moon Crossing Bridge and derives from the impression by Emperor Kameyama.
元々の橋は836年に現在の橋から100～200メートルほど上流に建てられたと言われています。橋は、何度も洪水で流され、応仁の乱などの戦争で焼失もしました。1606年、角倉了以が、保津川を開削し、現在の橋の場所に新しい橋を建てました。その後、現在の橋は、1934年に建てられました。
It is said that the original bridge was build about 100 or 200 metres upstream from the present bridge in 836. The bridge was swept away by floods many times and was also burnt down by wars such as the Ōnin War. In 1606 Suminokura Ryōi excavated the Hozu River and built the new bridge on the site of the present bridge. Afterwards the present bridge was built in 1934.
