Jōjakkō-ji Temple is situated halfway up Mount Ogura, which is famed in Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka by one hundred poets. The mountainside of the precincts offers a full view of the townscape of Sagano. The garden of the precincts has more than 200 maple trees and the whole mountain turns red in autumn. The name of the temple derives from the scene being suggestive of the Pure Land.
